Boiler, Elevator and Coal Mine Safety Division
Our Mission
To maximize boiler, elevator and coal mine safety, and provide for effective coal mine accident response.
The Division of Boiler and Elevator Safety also administers Coal Miner Certification and the Office of Coal Mine Safety from offices in Price, Utah.
The Division’s challenge is to apply appropriate engineering and inspection standards to ensure that the people of Utah will not be harmed by defective boilers, pressure vessels, elevators or escalators. To that end, the Division emphasizes training to allow inspectors to remain current with new technologies. The Division also participates in the development of national codes governing boilers, pressure vessels, elevators and escalators.
Boiler and Elevator
The Boiler and Elevator Vessel Safety program has been in place since Utah was a
territory, but the first major milestone occurred on July 1, 1967, when the Utah
Legislature enacted the Boiler and Pressure Vessel Act.
Coal Miner Certification
The Coal Miner Certification Section is responsible for the certification of coal miners working in Utah’s coal mining industry. The Section administers five different certification tests.
Office of Coal Mine Safety
Following the Crandall Canyon Mine Disaster, where six mine workers and three rescue workers died, Governor Jon M. Huntsman, Jr. issued an executive order establishing the Utah Mine Safety Commission.
